There is a belief that keeps a lot of people in Perth out of gyms like ours: that CrossFit is for people who are already fit. Young, athletic, comfortable with a barbell. If that were true, our 5am class in Balcatta would be a much quieter place.
The truth is that people in their 40s, 50s and 60s start CrossFit all the time. Many of them haven't trained seriously in a decade or more. Some have never trained at all. And they're often the members who get the most out of it, because the gap between where they start and how much better everyday life can feel is the biggest.
Nobody is asking you to do what a 25-year-old does. That is the whole point of how CrossFit works. Every workout we run at TandEm can be adjusted — the weight, the movement, the pace, the volume. Two people can do the same session side by side, one with an empty barbell and one with a loaded one, and both finish having worked exactly as hard as they should have.
The better question is the one most people over 40 are quietly asking themselves already: do I feel as strong and capable as I want to? Carrying shopping up the stairs, getting off the floor easily, keeping up with your kids or grandkids, trusting your own balance. That is what training here is actually for. The barbells are just the tool.
You don't get thrown into a class on day one. Every new member at TandEm — regardless of age or experience — starts with our Fundamentals program: three one-hour sessions, one-on-one with a coach, scheduled at times that suit you rather than around our class timetable.
In those three sessions you will:
Fundamentals is $220 for the three sessions. Nobody is watching, nobody is comparing, and by the end of it the intimidating part is gone.
Tell your coach everything. The dodgy knee, the shoulder that clicks, the fact you haven't run since school. None of it rules you out — it just tells us which version of each movement suits you. Our coaches adjust sessions around this every single day. And if you're managing a health condition, it's always worth checking in with your GP before starting something new.
Aim for three sessions a week. Three regular sessions, every week, will do far more for you than one heroic month followed by three on the couch. It's also the minimum that lets your body actually adapt — train less often than that and every session leaves you sore and starting over, which is where most people lose heart. Regular beats heroic, every time.
Expect to be surprised. Most people over 40 walk in underestimating themselves. Strength comes back. Skills you assumed were behind you turn out not to be. Progress at this age is real and it is measurable — you'll see it in the numbers on the whiteboard and feel it outside the gym.
TandEm has been coaching people in Balcatta since 2015, and our classes hold a genuine range of ages. Small classes mean the coach knows your name, knows your history, and is watching your movement — not just running a clock. And when the session's done, The Wooden Spoon café is right next door for a coffee, which is where half the real conversations happen anyway.
Starting anything new at 45 or 55 takes a bit of nerve. We know that. What we can promise is that the version of CrossFit waiting for you at TandEm is built for exactly where you are — not where a fitness ad thinks you should be.
