How Often Should You Do CrossFit? Why Three Sessions a Week Is the Minimum

September 7, 2026

It is the question we get asked most often at TandEm CrossFit in Balcatta, usually somewhere in the first week: how many times a week do I actually need to come?

The honest answer is three. Not one. Not two when work is quiet. Three, every week, as a floor rather than a goal.

That number surprises people, because two sessions a week sounds sensible and achievable. It is also the single most common reason someone trains for three months, feels no different, and quietly stops.

What happens when you train less than three times a week

Training is a conversation between effort and recovery. You do something hard, your body notices, and over the following days it adapts so that the same thing is easier next time. That adaptation is the entire point.

The catch is that the signal fades. When your sessions are spread five or six days apart, each one lands like a first session. You get the soreness without the progress. Over a few months that pattern tends to look like this:

  • You stay sore. Every session is a shock to a body that has had time to forget the last one.
  • The movements never click. Squatting, pressing and hinging are skills. Skills need repetition close enough together to stick.
  • The weights stop moving. Strength is built by repeated exposure, not by occasional big efforts.
  • Motivation drains. Working hard and seeing nothing change is discouraging, and it should be. The effort was real. The frequency was not.

Three sessions a week changes all of it. The gap between sessions is short enough that your body treats training as normal rather than as an emergency. Soreness settles down after the first few weeks. Movements start feeling like yours. And because the workouts are varied, three sessions still leaves four days for the rest of your life.

Three is a minimum, not a ceiling

Plenty of our members train four or five times a week and love it. But three is the line where the maths starts working in your favour, so it is the number we build around. If you can only commit to two right now, that is worth knowing before you start — it is better to plan properly for three than to be disappointed by two.

How to actually fit three sessions in

Most people do not have a time problem so much as a scheduling problem. Sessions that are decided on the day rarely happen. Sessions that live in the calendar do.

Pick three specific slots and treat them as fixed. Our timetable in Balcatta is built to make that possible:

  • 5am and 6am, Monday to Friday — done before the day starts, and before anything can move it.
  • 9:30am, Monday, Wednesday and Friday — popular with people working from home and parents with kids at school. Three days a week, which is a ready-made schedule on its own.
  • 5pm, Monday to Friday and 6pm, Monday to Wednesday — straight after work, on the way home.
  • 7:30am Saturday — a good anchor if your weekdays are unpredictable.

A pattern that works well is Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or two weekdays plus Saturday morning. Spacing matters less than consistency, but leaving a day between sessions where you can is a comfortable way to start.

What if you are not fit enough for three yet?

This is the part worth hearing clearly: every workout at TandEm is scaled to the person doing it. The weights change, the movements change, the distances change. A first-week beginner and a member of ten years do the same session on the same clock, at loads that suit each of them. Nobody is asked to do something they are not ready for.

That is also why every new member starts with Fundamentals — three one-hour sessions with a coach, $220, booked at times that suit you rather than dropped into a busy class. You learn the movements properly and unhurried, so that when you do start training three times a week, those three sessions are useful ones.
