It is the question we hear more than any other at TandEm CrossFit in Balcatta. Someone comes in for a consultation, sits down, and before anything else asks: how long until I see results?
Nobody wants a vague answer to that. So here is a realistic timeline, based on years of watching people start from scratch in this room. One thing up front: everything below assumes you are training a minimum of three times a week. That number is not a sales pitch. It is the point at which your body starts adapting instead of just recovering.
The first fortnight is mostly about learning. You are working out how to hold a barbell, how to breathe through a set of air squats, and where everything lives in the gym. You will be sore. That is normal, and it settles.
Before you set foot in a class, you will do Fundamentals - three one-hour sessions with a coach, scheduled around you outside regular class times. It costs $220. Those three hours are where the movements get taught properly, so that when you join a class you are not guessing.
This is where most people report the first real change, and it is rarely the one they expected. It is usually energy. Getting through the afternoon without flagging. Sleeping better. Carrying the shopping in from the car in one trip without thinking about it.
You will also notice the workouts stop being a shock. The warm-up feels like a warm-up. You know what a round of ten wall balls is going to cost you, and you pace it accordingly.
By now there are numbers. You have a weight you can squat that you could not squat in week one. You have finished a workout in less time than the last time it came up. This is the stage where CrossFit gets genuinely satisfying, because the scoreboard is you against your own logbook.
Visible changes vary enormously between people, and they depend on far more than training - sleep, stress and what you eat all matter. We would rather tell you that plainly than promise you a number.
Three months is the threshold we pay attention to. People who get to three months tend to stay for years. Not because anything magical happens at week twelve, but because by then training is no longer something you have to talk yourself into. It is simply what you do on a Monday.
Training once or twice a week is the most common reason people decide CrossFit did not work for them. At that frequency the body never gets the chance to adapt. Every session feels like starting over, you stay permanently sore, the numbers do not move, and motivation quietly disappears. Three sessions a week is the point where the soreness fades, the skills stick, and progress becomes obvious.
We run classes at 5am and 6am on weekdays, 9:30am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 5pm Monday to Friday, 6pm Monday to Wednesday, and 7:30am on Saturday. The 9:30am class is popular with people working from home and parents whose kids are at school. With that spread, three sessions a week is manageable around most Perth work schedules.
