Sore After CrossFit? Recovery Basics for Beginners in Balcatta

August 18, 2026

You finish your first few CrossFit sessions feeling good. Then you try to sit down the next morning and discover muscles you did not know existed. This is normal. It happens to almost everyone starting out at our Balcatta gym, and it is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.

What matters is what you do next. Recovery is not complicated, but most beginners get it backwards — they train hard, then rest for five days waiting to feel normal again, then train hard, then rest for five days. That cycle is the reason people quit in the first two months.

Why you get sore in the first place

New movements load your body in ways it is not used to. Squatting to depth, pressing overhead, hinging at the hip under load — even scaled right down, these are new patterns. Your body responds by adapting. The soreness that shows up a day or two later is part of that process, and it fades as your body gets used to the work.

The key word is used to. Your body can only adapt to something it sees regularly.

The single biggest recovery mistake: training too little

This sounds backwards, so stay with it.

If you train once or twice a week, every session is a first session. Your body never gets past the initial shock, so you stay sore, you never feel like you are improving, and eventually you decide CrossFit is just not for you. We have watched it happen enough times to be certain about it.

At TandEm we recommend a minimum of three sessions a week. Three is where adaptation starts. The soreness settles, the movements start to feel familiar, and you begin to notice things — a heavier bar, an easier warm-up, a workout you would have walked out of a month ago. Below three, none of that happens.

So if you are sore and thinking about training less, the honest answer is usually the opposite.

What actually helps

None of this is exotic. It is the boring stuff, done consistently.

  • Sleep. More than anything else on this list. Most of the adaptation you are chasing happens while you are asleep, and an extra hour will do more for you than any supplement.
  • Eat enough. Beginners routinely undereat when they start training, then wonder why they feel flat. Protein at every meal and enough total food to fuel the work. The Wooden Spoon Café shares our premises at 2/76 Erindale Road, and there are plenty of whole-food, paleo and gluten-free options if you want something straight after class.
  • Drink water. Especially through a Perth summer, and especially for the 5am crowd who roll out of bed and straight into a warm-up.
  • Move on your off days. A walk, a swim at Trigg, a bike ride. Gentle movement usually feels better than sitting still.
  • Turn up anyway. Being a bit sore is not a reason to skip. A proper warm-up and a scaled session will generally leave you feeling better than the couch would.

Where coaching comes in

You are never left to work out on your own how hard to go. Every class at TandEm is coached, every workout is scaled to the person doing it, and part of a coach's job is telling you when to back off. If you are wrecked from a big week at work, we will adjust the loading. That is normal, and it happens in every class.

It also means you can be honest with us. Tell your coach how you are feeling before the session, not after.

How to build the three sessions in

The reason we run classes across the whole day is so three sessions a week is realistic for you, whatever your schedule looks like:

  • 5am and 6am, weekdays — for people who want it done before work
  • 9:30am Monday, Wednesday and Friday — popular with people working from home and parents once the kids are at school
  • 5pm Monday to Friday, and 6pm Monday to Wednesday
  • 7:30am Saturday

Pick three that you can genuinely hold to for a month. Not the three that sound most impressive — the three you will actually make. Consistency is the whole game.

Starting from scratch

Everyone who trains at TandEm starts with Fundamentals: three one-hour sessions, one-on-one with a coach, booked around your schedule outside normal class times. It costs $220. We take you through the movements properly before you ever set foot in a class, which is a large part of why the first few weeks feel manageable rather than overwhelming.

If you have been putting off starting because you are worried about how sore or unfit you will feel, come and talk to us. We coach beginners in Balcatta every week, and none of them arrived fit. Book your free fitness consultation and we will sit down, work out what three sessions a week looks like for you, and get you started properly.
