Before kids, training was simple. You went when you felt like it, stayed as long as you liked, and nobody was waiting at home wondering where dinner was. Now an hour to yourself feels like something you have to justify. If that sounds familiar, this post is for you — because plenty of parents train at our Balcatta gym, and the way they make it work is more practical than you might think.
Most parents don't stop training because they stop caring. They stop because every session at a regular gym demands a dozen small decisions: what to do, how many sets, which machine is free, whether forty minutes was enough. When you're already making a thousand decisions a day for other people, that mental load is the thing that keeps you on the couch.
A CrossFit class removes all of it. The workout is programmed before you arrive. A coach runs the warm-up, teaches the movements, adjusts the weights, and watches the clock. You walk in, do exactly what you're told for one hour, and walk out. For a lot of our members — parents especially — that is the single biggest reason it sticks where everything else didn't.
Here's the honest part. We recommend a minimum of three sessions per week, and for busy parents that can sound like a lot. But training once or twice a week is the worst of both worlds: your body never gets the chance to adapt, so you stay sore after every session, you don't see progress, and eventually you wonder why you're bothering. That cycle is where most gym memberships go to die.
Three sessions is where it changes. The soreness settles down, the movements start to feel familiar, and you notice real differences — carrying a toddler on one hip and the shopping in the other hand stops being a workout in itself. Three hours a week is the honest price of actually improving, and it's a far better deal than five half-hearted hours that lead nowhere.
Finding three hours in a parent's week is a logistics problem, so here's the timetable logic our members use:
Pick three fixed slots and treat them like school assembly — in the calendar, non-negotiable, boring in the best way. Consistency beats intensity every time.
The other worry we hear from parents is fitness itself: it's been years, maybe a whole pregnancy or three, since you trained properly. Here's what matters — every workout scales. The same session that challenges a competitive athlete is adjusted to challenge you exactly where you are today, whether that means lighter weights, fewer reps or a different movement altogether. Nobody in the room is comparing. Most of them started exactly where you are.
Every new member at TandEm begins with our Fundamentals program: three one-hour sessions with a coach, where you learn the movements properly before joining classes. It costs $220, and — this is the part busy parents appreciate most — the sessions are scheduled around you, outside regular class times. Nap time, lunch break, after bedtime: we find times that fit your week, not the other way around.
By the time you walk into your first class, you know the movements, you know the coaches, and the whiteboard jargon isn't scary anymore.
If you're a parent in Balcatta or anywhere around Perth's northern suburbs and you've been waiting for life to get less busy before you start — it won't, and you don't need it to. Three hours a week, everything decided for you, and a coach in your corner. Book your free fitness consultation and we'll work out a schedule that fits around your family, not instead of it.
